The seaman’s book can be applied for at KIWA
To submit this application to KIWA, you need:
- Proof of enrollment in a maritime training program, such as KZV
Or an employer’s statement from a ship manager or maritime employer - A passport photo
- A copy of your ID
There are costs associated with applying for the Seaman’s Book.
Proof of enrollment in a maritime training program can be requested from the office via info@ezs.nl after enrolling in the Kleine or Grote Zeilvaart.

Rating Deck
In Dutch: wachtlopend gezel aan dek
You can become a Rating Deck, which is a crew member who supports the deck officers. You are therefore an assistant on deck, without a management role. To apply for the Certificate of Competency as Rating Deck at Kiwa, you must have:
- Medical examination
- Seaman’s book with six months of sea time (for rating deck sailing ships, sea time may be obtained on sailing inland waterways)
- A ‘Statement of Competence Requirements’ signed by your captain
- STCW Basic Safety

Inland waterway sea time
You can progress from the traditional sailing fleet (bruine vloot) to sailor on seagoing sailing ships.
For the general Rating Deck Certificate of Competency (qualified rating deck all ships), all sea time must be completed at sea.
Officer
To be allowed to sail at sea, you need a Certificate of Competency. There are different requirements for each role. You start at the bottom of the ladder and build up your qualification with knowledge, service time, courses, and medical examinations. Requirements may differ for each waterway, type of ship, and role.

The components do not all have a fixed order. Some things can be done simultaneously; you can already be sailing and thus building up service time, while attending school in the winter.
