Deckhand Course
General information
Before you are allowed to work on board a (sailing) inland vessel, you must have completed the basic deckhand safety training. Once you have completed this training and undergone a medical examination for inland shipping, you can apply for a service record book (dienstboekje).
In this course, you will learn the basic skills for handling hawsers and ropes; this takes place on board Kaatje, our training vessel in the garden of the Enkhuizen Nautical College. Various items of life-saving equipment, emergency procedures, firefighting, man overboard, and handling hazardous substances are also covered.
Upon completion of the course, you will receive an Emergency Response Training (BHV) certificate in addition to the deckhand certificate.
Do you only need an Emergency Response Training (BHV) certificate? In that case, participating in one of the days—the BHV day—is sufficient.
Who is this training intended for?
For anyone who wants to sail professionally on a commercial inland vessel and wishes to apply for a service record book (dienstboekje) for that purpose.
Admission requirements
Course participation: minimum age 16.
Please note: to sail as a deckhand in the ‘bruine vloot’, you must be at least 18 years old!
Exemption
You can receive an exemption from one of the days of the course if you hold a valid (max. 1 year old) BHV certificate (not obtained online). Please contact the office if this is the case.
Full exemption applies if you hold a valid (max. 5 years old) Basic Safety Training certificate. In that case, apply for the certificate directly from the SAB.
Course content
The course lasts three days; the subjects that are covered are as follows:
- Use of life-saving equipment to prevent drowning
- Specific working conditions on board a vessel
- Firefighting on board a vessel
- On-board risks due to noise
- Handling hazardous substances on board a vessel
- Basic principles of first aid
- Alerting and evacuating in emergency situations
