Sea Service and the Training Record Book
During your sea service, your days at sea, you gain practical experience. You demonstrate in practice to your mate or captain that you understand and have mastered various tasks. These sea days are essentially an internship period.
- KZV 180 days
- GZV 360 days
You keep track of your sea days in the Training Record Book. The captain or mate signs off on the sea days. In addition to tracking sea days, the Training Record Book contains various tasks. During your period on board, you must demonstrate that you can perform all these tasks well and have them properly under control. The skipper/mate assesses this and signs them off once you have achieved sufficient proficiency.

Important points regarding the Training Record Book are as follows:
- Sea days must be signed off on a vessel (or vessels) sailing under class or deployed as a ‘Training Vessel’. You can contact us to determine if the vessel you are sailing on qualifies;
- Part of this sea time may be signed off in inland navigation and/or on mechanically propelled vessels (motor vessels). Naturally, only those tasks applicable to the situation can be signed off. For KZV, the maximum number of sea days that may be signed off in inland navigation is half.
- The Certificate of Competency must be applied for within four years of obtaining your Certificate of Theory (Kennisbewijs). This means that the signed-off tasks must be no more than 4 years old.
- You may start having sea time and tasks signed off even before you start school! This is also valid for a maximum of 4 years.

Signing off the Training Record Book
Once you have completed all tasks, the Training Record Book can be signed off by the school.
- Option 1: Visit the school with your Training Record Book and your application form for the Certificate of Competency.
- Option two is to scan and send your Training Record Book and the application form, for example via WeTransfer, to cosmo@ezs.nl. (No links to Drive or Dropbox; these will not be processed).
- The third option is not our preference, which is to send your Training Record Book and the application form by post. This is entirely at your own risk and we advise against it; it would be a shame if your Training Record Book were lost by a postal service. If you do choose this option, be sure to make copies of the Training Record Book for your own records beforehand.
Please note: depending on how complete your application is, how busy the school is, and holiday periods, it can take two to four weeks before you receive your Certificate of Competency.
