What do I need to obtain my Certificate of Competency?
Limited Sailing
General information
With the Limited Sailing training program, you can obtain the certificate of theory so that you
- Can become a Master on sailing vessels up to 500 GT, limited sailing area
- Can become a Mate on sailing vessels up to 500 GT, worldwide trade.
- Inland navigation sailing skipper
The certificate of theory does not yet grant you a Certificate of Competency; you will need to arrange a number of other matters for that. However, this training program is a very large step toward your Certificate of Competency for a specific position. Your diploma from this program serves as the certificate of theory, a component of your Certificate of Competency. You can read more about what else you need to do here.
Who is the training program intended for?
For everyone who wants a certificate of theory, or who ‘simply’ wants to have more knowledge about professional sailing. The program is designed for commercial shipping, but other interested parties are also welcome. Many of our students want to learn more about navigation and sailing on private vessels, luxury yachts, or other ships.
Admission requirements
There are no admission requirements.
However, some practical experience in professional sailing is an advantage.
The program is for people aged 18 and older.

Course content
The subjects taught are:
Navigation
Use of nautical charts, plotting courses, reducing bearings, compass error, positioning by means of bearings, dead reckoning, tidal movement
Instruments
Compasses, bearing instruments, logs, leads, radar, radar plotting, GPS, AIS
Meteorology
Reading weather maps, storm warnings, meteorological instruments, weather phenomena, clouds, wind, routing
Practical Navigation
Use of nautical charts, plotting courses and bearings, use of publications, buoyage systems, routing
Shipbuilding, Rigging and Equipment
Ship construction, reading drawings, classification societies, watertight subdivision, docking, safe working practices, environment, equipment, fire extinguishing systems
Maneuvering
Propeller, rudder, watchkeeping, anchoring, heavy weather maneuvers, MOB maneuvers, Search & Rescue procedures
Stability
Stability data, water displacement, displacement, law of center of gravity shift, list, free surface effects, stability curve
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs)
Good seamanship, ship lighting, steering and sailing rules, conduct of vessels in restricted visibility
Maritime Law
Maritime laws and decrees, safety, position of the Master, employment contracts, work and rest hours, logbook
Marine Engineering
Diesel engines, propulsion, auxiliary systems, electricity, technical drawings
English Language
Nautical English (Standard Marine Communication Phrases)

Why follow this training at the EZS?
The Enkhuizen Nautical College has been the institute where professional sailors are trained since 1978. Since then, the nautical college has kept pace with the times. Every year, all training programs and courses are thoroughly reviewed and adapted to current times and regulations.
Lessons at the maritime school are structured and of high quality. We achieve this with expert teachers, good teaching materials, and a pleasant social environment. Safe sailing starts with a good and solid foundation of training, knowledge, and experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I spread the school year over two years?
This is possible under certain conditions:
- If you are using a visa with a validity shorter than the period of study, or
- You are bound by a sailing schedule that prevents you from attending lessons for the entire study season, or
- Another compelling reason, which will be assessed by the management.
- In that case, the school’s conditions are:
You only pay the registration fee for the second year - You purchase the new course manuals where adjustments have been made compared to the previous year.
- Attending subjects in a subsequent year is always subject to available space in the classroom.
- You must submit your request via the administration at least two weeks before the start of the school year.

I want to do the training, but I cannot afford it right now
Are you currently unable to pay for the training? You may be eligible for a financial contribution through the Henk Wever Fund.

Can I also follow the lessons online?
Yes, you can also follow the training online.
If you are unable to physically attend the lessons in Enkhuizen, for example due to illness
Or the complete training program.
You will receive more information about this during the first lesson. Alternatively, you can contact the office.
We advise you to attend the training at the school; education at our location provides a higher chance of passing.
Registration
Register quickly, as we have a waiting list most years!
Once you have paid the registration fee, your spot is reserved.
The tuition fees can be paid later, but must be settled before the first day of class.
